Louie's is an easy six-block walk from our house, making it very convenient. There weren't many people having brunch that breezy Saturday morning, so we nearly had the place to ourselves.
A great thing about eating brunch at 10 am (as opposed to breakfast at the time) is that you can order a cocktail. I had a bloody Mary, which was excellent: lots of spice and the perfect amount of vodka.
The brunch menu was fun, with some twists (like mascarpone-apple stuffed French toast) as well as your basics, like biscuits and gravy. I went with the mac-n-cheese-stuffed omelette, because, frankly, when would I ever again have the opportunity to order such a thing? It was ho-hum: the mac-n-cheese was bland and the egg reminded me of the college dinning hall. That said, the side salad of roasted tomatoes, goat cheese and balsamic vinagrette was out of this world. And when was the last time you said that about a salad?
I was a little apprehensive about taking a one-year-old to a wine bar, but it worked out just fine. Service was good. I would go back for a fancy brunch, though for my money, I prefer straight-up breakfast food at the Classic Cookie next door.
My score: 4/5.
